Monument Park
This project sought to transform perceptions of the Docklands, addressing challenges with bold solutions: revitalizing retail engagement, providing shelter, creating an inclusive space for all ages, and offering a playful, interactive experience. Above all, the space was designed to become art itself—a landmark blending creativity with functionality. The vision took shape through the artistry of Callum Morton, whose submission was selected for its ingenuity and impact. Collaboration with esteemed landscape architects Occulus further enriched the project, ensuring a seamless integration of art, architecture, and nature. As Callum Morton eloquently expressed in his opening remarks, this project isn’t just a space—it’s an invitation to experience public art and urban design in harmony.
What we’ve created here isn’t just a park filled with sculptures, as some might think. It’s a single, unified work—a public park, a garden, a place for people to gather, relax, seek shelter, and play. The forms that rise from the ground and the plants that emerge are all contained beneath one continuous plane that spans the entire site. Ultimately, this ground plane is the true subject and the element that unifies the entire space.
Sustainability
The sustainability of this project goes beyond environmental concerns—it’s rooted in social sustainability. This space serves as an open-air sculpture park, offering a rare opportunity for people in a densely urbanized area to pause and reconnect. With built-in seating, tree planting that will provide shade over time, expansive lawns to relax on, and spaces designed for both intellectual and physical engagement, it fosters a vibrant, interactive environment. This is more than just a public park; it’s a place to play, unwind, and engage—a vital and cherished space in an otherwise built-up location.
The sculptures are crafted from glass-reinforced concrete, allowing them to be hollow and maximizing their impact while minimizing material use. The unifying 'rug' or Hoddle Grid is made of concrete, chosen for its durability and long-lasting quality. As a team, we anticipated the crowds from the football and the natural demand for a space like this. Lighting is provided by LED technology, the most energy-efficient option available, meeting all Melbourne City guidelines for sustainability. Retail sustainability was also a key consideration. We designed with the intention to revitalize the underperforming perimeter retail in the area, offering a fresh perspective and bringing new vitality to the space.
